Two Amazing Performances
Blue is the Warmest Color (2013)
*** 1/2 (out of 4)
Controversial French film about a teenage Adele (Adele Exarchopoulos) whose life begins to change when she starts a relationship with Emma (Lea Seydoux). There's really no point in going into great details about the plot. Let's just say that we see Adele's life from her high school days and through a period of years where her thoughts on life and relationships certainly change. This here is a pretty good drama at best but I'm going to admit that there's really nothing here in the story that we haven't seen several times before. Yes, it's hard to make an original story these days but I think the drama of life, relationships and families that's on display here, while entertaining, really aren't anything that new. With that said, the two lead performances are among the best that you're ever going to see and by the time the movie was over I was simply in love with both actresses. Exarchopoulos does a masterful job in the role of Adele and what was so amazing to me is how complex and wide the performance is. She's given a lot of different emotions that she has to display and it was rather remarkable watching here because it almost felt like you were watching a documentary on a real person. She has to play a naive teenager, a confused adult and various other things and she's simply flawless. Seydoux also deserves a lot of credit as she's equally impressive with the more worldly character. The two together are just so raw and passionate that it's certainly one of the most memorable couples in recent times. As for the controversy, the sex scenes are certainly quite graphic, loud, in your face and erotic. I must say that while the scenes were quite memorable, at the same time I couldn't help but think they really took away from the rest of the film and especially once you get to the third or fourth graphic scene. It almost seems like they were in the picture just to give people something to talk about so that the film could gain more attention. The sex scenes are certainly what got people into the theater and I guess we can be thankful because they're going to get to see two masterful performances. BLUE IS THE WARMEST COLOR isn't going to appeal to many due to its graphic nature but those willing to sit through it will certainly be rewarded.
